BOC Bursary Scheme

Academic excellence is declining in townships and rural areas, with socio-economic conditions identified as a major contributor. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) — once the lifeline for disadvantaged students — now faces systemic failures that leave thousands of deserving matriculants without the means to study further.

The BOC Bursary Scheme is our answer. Our mission is to build a sustainable, community-backed alternative that ensures no deserving learner is left behind. Through partnerships with shopping malls, corporate donors, and institutions like DBSA, we fund tertiary education for high-achieving students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

What the Bursary Covers

  • Full or partial tuition fees at universities and TVET colleges
  • Accommodation and transport allowances where applicable
  • Study materials, laptop grants, and living stipends
  • Mentorship, career counselling, and alumni network access
  • Annual academic progress monitoring and wrap-around support

Eligibility Criteria

  • South African citizen from a township or rural community
  • Matriculated with a Bachelor's pass (minimum 60% aggregate preferred)
  • Demonstrated financial need (household income below threshold)
  • Accepted or provisionally accepted at a recognised tertiary institution
  • Commitment to community service and academic excellence

STEM Education

Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics

Delivered in partnership with JB Education, Sangari South Africa, and supported by DBSA — our STEM programmes ensure learners in underserved communities are not left behind in critical subjects.

Primary Phase

Foundation & Intermediate · Grades R–7

Young learners learn best through play, exploration, and tangible experiences. Research consistently shows that early exposure to STEM builds numeracy confidence, scientific curiosity, and collaborative problem-solving skills that compound through high school and beyond.

What Works Best for Young Learners

  • Inquiry-based learning — children ask questions and discover answers through guided experiments
  • Hands-on robotics kits — Sangari SA's age-appropriate robotics build fine motor skills and logical thinking
  • Storytelling with science — connecting STEM concepts to everyday township life (water, energy, transport)
  • Collaborative team challenges — building social skills alongside technical skills
  • Short, high-energy sessions — 45–60 minute blocks maintaining focus and enthusiasm

Programme Components

  • Weekly in-school STEM enrichment sessions
  • Robotics and coding clubs (Scratch Jr, LEGO Education)
  • Science fair preparation and inter-school competitions
  • Teacher capacity-building workshops with Sangari facilitators
  • Parent engagement days to extend learning at home

High School Phase

Senior & FET · Grades 8–12

At high school level, the focus shifts to intensive subject mastery, exam preparation, and career pathway awareness. Our partnership with Sangari SA provides industry-grade STEM equipment, while JB Education contributes proven mathematics methodology and Saturday School frameworks.

Core Subject Focus

  • Mathematics — algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus readiness
  • Physical Sciences — mechanics, electricity, chemistry fundamentals
  • Life Sciences — where applicable for health science pathways
  • ICT & Coding — Python basics, data literacy, engineering design

Saturday School Programme

Every Saturday during term, selected high schools host intensive 3-hour sessions:

TimeActivity
08:00 – 09:30Mathematics masterclass (topic rotation)
09:45 – 11:00Physical Sciences practical & theory
11:15 – 12:00Robotics / coding lab (Sangari equipment)

Holiday School Programme

During June and December holidays, we run 5-day intensive camps:

  • Grade 12 exam preparation bootcamps (mock exams, marking feedback)
  • Grade 10–11 bridge programmes to close foundational gaps
  • STEM career exposure days with university and industry guests
  • Team robotics challenges and science olympiad preparation
  • Past paper workshops with JB Education-trained facilitators

Proven STEM Approaches We Use

Project-Based Learning

Learners solve real community problems — designing water filters, solar chargers, or traffic solutions — making STEM relevant and memorable.

Peer Tutoring Model

Top-performing Grade 11–12 learners mentor younger grades, reinforcing their own knowledge while building leadership.
